László Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946), a Hungarian-born photographer, filmmaker, painter, sculptor, printmaker, graphic designer, and stage designer, was also an influential teacher at the Bauhaus and later at the Institute of Design in Chicago. In his embrace of technology and exploration of new media, Moholy-Nagy foreshadowed many aspects of contemporary art. Dennis Jon, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, will discuss the life and work of Moholy-Nagy in the context of a forthcoming retrospective of the artist's work at the MIA.

also, since we have been looking at some bruce mau stuff, you all should cheak out "massive change", I have the book if you want to barrow it, but its a collection of designs and designers who have practical and great solutions to the worlds problems. maybe some of you went to the lecture last year at the walker that talked about it.

Here it is, pics from this years design camp. I think we all had way to much fun, us current andpast CVA students! We all enjoyed the presentations of Chase, Tronic Studios, Brian Collins and the people of Ready Made magazine. I think we all snuck in to an overload of aesthetic apparatus's workshop and came home with some sweet mini posters. Later in the night we all crammed into the CVA cabin after a night of partying with fellow creatives and students. Overall it is a definite we will see you next year rolling of our tongues!

St. Paul, MN - The Minnesota Museum of American Art (MMAA) is proud to present ART HERE: Get Out the Vote on September 13 at pm. The event will feature an art exhibition with the winners of the American Institute of Graphic Arts’ “Get Out the Vote” poster design competition, music on the patio and complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Poster art from the 24 winners will be displayed in physical form and also digitally projected on the walls of the MMAA’s raw gallery space.

In addition to non-partisan voter oriented art, the patio will feature musical performances by Solid Gold, Birthday Suits, Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lappelles and A Night In the Box. This will be the last event held on the patio in the 2008 season. In the event of unfavorable weather, the concert will be moved indoors to the raw gallery space.

With a goal of registering 10,000 new voters, MPIRG will be on hand to register everyone of voting age in attendance. MPIRG is a student-directed, non-partisan group that empowers and trains students and engages the community to take collective action in the public interest throughout the state of Minnesota.

Tickets for this event are currently on pre-sale for $10 courtesy of Indie Tickets on our website. Student Tickets will be available at the door the night of the event for $5. Events at the MMAA have been selling out since early July. Purchasing advance tickets is highly recommended.

AIGA 's Get Out the Vote

AIGA has invited designers from across the United States to create nonpartisan posters and YouTube submissions that inspire the American public to participate in the electoral process and vote for a presidential candidate in the 2008 general election. an AIGA Design for Democracy initiative since the 2000 election, enables designers to engage in the public arena by contributing to a coordinated voter mobilization campaign. By motivating eligible citizens to register and turn out on election day, Get Out the Vote fulfills an ongoing AIGA objective of demonstrating the value of design to the public, public officials and business by providing a clear call to action for an activity that is important to everyone.

Eight of the submitted posters will be selected to be professionally printed and distributed nationally. In addition, AIGA has commissioned sixteen AIGA Medalists to design posters that will be printed and distributed nationally as well. There will be sets of 24 (11" x 17") professionally printed posters made available to each AIGA chapter. Plus, any of the submitted posters are available as online PDFs for anyone to download, print and post independently.

The Walker Art Center will be showing all of the Get Out the Vote posters via video projection in the Bazinet Garden Lobby from August 19 through September 7, covering both the DNC and RNC events. In conjunction with the Republican National Convention, AIGA would like the professionally printed posters to be displayed in public spaces in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. Other possible venues are: the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Weisman Museum, the MCAD Gallery and/or the atrium at Target headquarters. Other suggestions?

This could be a starting point for a poster hanging effort throughout the metropolitan area in September and October. AIGA could have events where volunteers were given posters to distribute in their communities. (Note: there are anti-posting ordinances is both Minneapolis and St. Paul, so the volunteers would have to ask private business owners if they could hang the posters in their store windows.) This could be a great opportunity to show the concern of designers in persuading people to participate in the voting process. This is just one suggestion for rallying the design community to participate in the Get Out the Vote effort. AIGA is open to other programming and event suggestions.

Typeface focuses on a rural Midwestern museum and print shop where international artists meet retired craftsmen and together navigate the convergence of modern design and traditional technique.

It’s a Thursday afternoon and all is quiet in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Main Street is virtually empty, and there are “for rent” signs in several shop windows. In the last few years, the un-employment rate has been consistently on the rise in the region. Factories are leaving the heartland for cheaper locales and the little town of Two Rivers is struggling to re-invent itself. Jim VanLanen, one of the town’s most industrious entrepreneurs, began developing small museums as a way to bring tourists and industry to the area.

A few blocks off the main drag, in a section of the old cavernous Hamilton printing factory, a lone employee waits in the most popular of these museums for visitors to come. A couple of individuals straggle in every few days and then, come Friday, the museum fills with life. Machines hum, presses print, artists buzz about. One weekend each month, the quiet of Two Rivers is interrupted as carloads of artisans drive in from across the Midwest. The place comes alive as printmaking workshops led by, and filled with, some of the region’s top creative talent descend on the sleepy enclave. The museum is significant to the town’s history, but more importantly, its existence is critical to the worldwide design community who are passionate about the history of their craft and its function in the contemporary field. They believe the future of their industry may lie in the past.

Typeface, Kartemquin’s latest documentary in progress, will bring this fascinating junction of historical and contemporary, as well as rural and urban America together for enjoyment and contemplation. This film will be of interest to art and graphic design enthusiasts, to teachers as an educational resource, and to anyone looking for a film about perseverance and preservation in the heart of America.

AIGA will partner with INDEX in promoting U.S. entries to an international competition for design projects that significantly improve life for a large number of people. One prize of 100,000 euros will be given in each of five categories.

AIGA will recommend one U.S. entry for each category: body, home, work, play and community. The AIGA nominations will then be judged against entries from other countries around the world. In addition, entries can be submitted directly to INDEX, although their probability of success is stronger with national organization endorsement.

The U.S. entries will be judged by the AIGA board using the following criteria:

Social, ecological, cultural and economic impact
Accessibility Affordability
Flexibility and simplicity
User-friendliness
Optimism
Level of innovation
Future potential Appropriate aesthetics

Be a creative buddy to a child who needs you.

This fall, work one-one-one with your child while creating side-by-side with fifty other creative people from advertising, design and architecture.

Help your child know the joy of creativity and self-expression, and the fun of working closely with a creative person like you.

At our “Kids Rule!” program, help the children imagine themselves as King or Queen of the World, then create a fanciful costume showing how they’ll use their power to help people. Spark imagination with our huge collection of art supplies, including fur, feathers, fake jewels and all sorts of wild stuff.

Share your career with your child, too. Bring something that shows your child what you do. Most of the kids will have no idea what a creative job in advertising or design is like.

At the end of the program, pose with the kids and their creations for professional photographers, then celebrate your child’s achievement in an exciting parade. Afterwards, join your fellow volunteers at a bar in Uptown.

The Design Frontier will concentrate on the needs and accomplishments of graphic designs maverick educators in universities, colleges, community colleges and high schools. Presentations will focus on the challenges and possibilities of dispersed conditions and small faculties in the country's smaller graphic design programs, often in regional towns without professional graphic design communities or AIGA chapters to provide adjunct faculty, professional role models, student internships and entry level jobs.

The program will include main-stage speakers, discussion sessions, student project presentations and paper presentations selected from submitted abstracts through a peer-reviewed process. The conference is open to AIGA members and non-members, design educators, practitioners and design students. More conference program and registration information is posted at www.designfrontier.org.

Bill Stumpf: He Built a Better Chair

Sit down. As you lean back in your comfortable and amazingly elegant Aeron chair, give thanks to Bill Stumpf. This beloved Minnesota-based industrial designer died on August 30, 2006 of complications from abdominal surgery. He was 70.

One of the first speakers for the Insights Lecture Series, Stumpf was a generous friend to the AIGA community. Throughout his life he championed the cause of civility in the design of mass produced products. In his work, he addressed basic cultural problems that are often ignored in contemporary design. By recognizing that the office is a microcosm of the larger world, Stumpf’s work linked objects and people, and incorporated a mixture of spontaneity and routine, comfort and wonder into the working environment. One of his design goals was “to make a beautiful chair comfortable.”

His Ergon (1976), Equa (1984) and Aeron (1994) office chairs, designed for Herman Miller, are three of the most important chairs designed in the past 50 years. Each of these ergonomically based designs succeeds in being simultaneously beautiful, comfortable and practical. The Walker Art Center featured Stumpf’s work in a playful 1984 exhibit called “A Serious Chair”. “He had enormous notebooks full of sketches, quotes and data gathered from anthropologists, biostatisticians, back surgeons and human-factors experts,” recalled Clark Malcolm, a friend and longtime colleague at Herman Miller. “All of it went into that big hopper of his brain and came out as designs.”

Stumpf began his association with Herman Miller, one of the world’s preeminent office furniture companies, in 1970 when he joined the staff of the Herman Miller Research Corporation. He founded his own design studio in Winona, Minnesota in 1972. The iconic Aeron office chair which Stumpf designed in collaboration with Don Chadwick, has become one of the best-selling office chairs in the world. In addition, his Ethospace furniture system was among the first to design both office furniture and interiors on a human scale with both more light and more attention to personal work styles.

In 2001, Stumpf received a Personal Recognition Award from the Industrial Designers Society of America. His 1998 book, “The Ice Palace That Melted Away” has become a classic design textbook. Most recently, he was awarded the 2006 Product Design Award from the Copper-Hewitt National Design Museum. It will be presented posthumously on October 18th.

Bill Stumpf’s love for the real world and real people was an integral part of his unabashed, big hearted midwestern approach to design. The intelligent way he incorporated fun and play into his designs has refreshed our spent eyes, calloused hearts and weary bottoms.

His funeral was a private family ceremony held in Stockholm, Wisconsin, his home in recent years. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date to honor Mr. Stumpf’s remarkable life and contributions to design. He is survived by his wife, Sharon and two of their children, Jon and Carol Stumpf, and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by three sons, David, Karl and Erich.

The start of the fall semester is also the start of the exhibition season at the College of Visual Arts Gallery. The first show will be the 2006 Biennial Faculty Exhibition. This bi-annual exhibit will feature works by faculty who teach in drawing and painting, sculpture, foundation studies, liberal arts, photography, graphic design, illustration, and printmaking programs. The exhibition will run September 7 - October 7, 2006. The public is invited to attend an opening reception on September 14 from 6 - 8 p. m. The Gallery is located at 173 Western Ave at Selby Avenue, St. Paul, MN. Hours are Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays 12 - 6 p. m. and Thursdays 12 - 8 p. m.

Sorry for the short notice, but on Thursday, July 27, from 4-5p.m., CVA is having a reception celebrating the new “Historic St. Paul Mural”. The mural is inside the 400 Selby Avenue Entrance of the Blair Arcade Building, around the corner from Fern’s and across from Suite T.

This event recognizes the completion of a mural competition for the CVA fine art summer mural painting course. The mural highlights St. Paul transportation in the 1890’s and was designed and painted by CVA students; Scott Demeranville, Craig Hedal, Charlie Mossey, Jillian Ranweiler, and Emily Zimanski. The course was planned and coordinated by CVA alumnus and faculty member, Neil Johnston.

Michael Vanderbyl has gained international prominence in the design field as a practitioner, educator, critic, and advocate. Established in 1973, Vanderbyl Design has evolved into a multidisciplinary studio with expertise in graphics, packaging, signage, interiors, showrooms, retail spaces, furniture, textiles, and fashion apparel. Vanderbyl is past president of AIGA, an AIGA medalist, and current dean of design at his alma mater, California College of the Arts.
